About
St Michael’s Church Tintern sits in a beautiful location on the river Wye, at the site of an important Roman river crossing. By 765AD it was home to a Celtic Christian church established some 350 years before the foundation of Tintern Abbey.
Today we warmly welcome both the local community as well as visitors to our weekly services, which include a special monthly family service led by the Church Lads’ and Church Girls’ Brigade. Our services normally follow the formal order for the Holy Eucharist.
The church has been updated and renovated over the centuries (the latest completed in 2022), allowing our church to serve as a vibrant hub for a variety of exciting activities, with music playing a key role in our inclusive welcome. We host Carol concerts, art shows, quizzes, Gospel choir concerts, Bach on the Bank and the annual Eco Fest. We particularly celebrate St David’s Day, Michaelmas and Remembrance Day as well as the traditional Christian festivals.
The doors of our church are open every day providing a place of meditation, connection and comfort. Many walkers following the Wye Valley Walk visit St Michael’s Church. Weddings, funerals and baptisms are integral to the life of the community; we cherish each visitor as we continue to serve those in need of solace, joy, celebration and communion.
